Richard Heinberg: why end of growth can mean more happiness

Richard Heinberg- whose latest book describes The End of Growth- isn’t looking for when the recession will end and we’ll get back to “normal”. He believes our decades-long era of growth was based on aberrant set of conditions- namely cheap oil, but also cheap minerals, cheap food, etc- and that looking ahead, we need to prepare for a “new normal”. The problem, according to Heinberg, is our natural resources just aren’t so cheap and plentiful anymore, and he’s not just talking about Peak Oil, Heinberg believes in Peak Everything (also the title of one of his books). Heinberg thinks for many, adjusting to a life where everything costs a bit more, could be very hard, but he also thinks the transition to a new normal might actually make life better. “Particularly in the Western industrialized countries we’ve gotten used to levels of consumption that are not only environmentally unsustainable, they also don’t make us happy. They’ve in fact hollowed out our lives. We’ve given up things that actually do give us satisfaction and pleasure so that we can work more and more hours to get more and more money with which to buy more and more stuff- more flatscreen tvs, bigger SUVs, bigger houses and it’s not making us happier. Well, guess what, it’s possible to downsize, it’s possible to use less, become more self sufficient, grow more of your own food, have chickens in your backyard and be a happier person.” This is not all theoretical. My Happy List. (V#4)

This is my Happy List. A list of things that make me happy. (Duh.) You should make one too. I guarantee it will make you happy. And, you know, happiness is awesome. So I shall just add this in here because I forgot to talk about it in the video. This list is comprised of things that no one else can effect. Of course Clementine and “sexy men” make me happy, but I don’t want to rely on them. Because things can change, or they might not be there, or they might get sick of you relying on them for happiness and it is just not fair on them. So make it about the little things. The little things you secretly appreciate and sometimes need reminding that you really do love them and they make you happy. And then they can make you even happier. (Excuse me tripping over words. It happens. And amuses me.)

Don’t Worry, Choose to Be Happy!

Many of us desire the American dream; having our own home, a white picket fence, a gorgeous wife, 2.5 kids, and plenty of cash in the bank. Sounds great, right? Not exactly. Once this is achieved, now what? Oh, maybe a bigger house or a larger picket fence, more money in the bank and more toys! After all, as the late Malcolm Forbes of Forbes’ magazine once said, “He who dies with the most toys wins.” Wins what? More happiness, more joy and fulfillment? That is precisely the question. Years ago, I also was seduced by this illusory dream. I pursued and achieved “The American Dream”. However after the sudden and shocking illness and subsequent death of my 38 year old wife, I began to meditate on what was really important to me. Death, as you know, has a way of giving clarity to one’s life. I realized that I needed to create my own dreams, my own happiness and my own fulfillment. Along the way I learned three major lessons.

What Is The Real Pain Behind Lies, Deceit And Broken Trust?

We have all been lied to, cheated, tricked and hurt. Sometimes it is just the common result of business, other times it is incompetence or a lack of accepting responsibility, but most of the time it is someone who is either a stranger or at least not very close to you, and this can upset you but you get over it. Inner peace and happiness will never be attained as long as your mind is upset. What I would like to discuss here are the events that we cannot get over, the ones we cannot let go of, and why that is.
