Many of us desire the American dream; having our own home, a white picket fence, a gorgeous wife, 2.5 kids, and plenty of cash in the bank. Sounds great, right? Not exactly. Once this is achieved, now what? Oh, maybe a bigger house or a larger picket fence, more money in the bank and more toys! After all, as the late Malcolm Forbes of Forbes’ magazine once said, “He who dies with the most toys wins.” Wins what? More happiness, more joy and fulfillment? That is precisely the question. Years ago, I also was seduced by this illusory dream. I pursued and achieved “The American Dream”. However after the sudden and shocking illness and subsequent death of my 38 year old wife, I began to meditate on what was really important to me. Death, as you know, has a way of giving clarity to one’s life. I realized that I needed to create my own dreams, my own happiness and my own fulfillment. Along the way I learned three major lessons.

We have all been lied to, cheated, tricked and hurt. Sometimes it is just the common result of business, other times it is incompetence or a lack of accepting responsibility, but most of the time it is someone who is either a stranger or at least not very close to you, and this can upset you but you get over it. Inner peace and happiness will never be attained as long as your mind is upset. What I would like to discuss here are the events that we cannot get over, the ones we cannot let go of, and why that is.

Those who cannot accept themselves for whom they are have low self esteem. Happiness seems out of their reach and they feel like second class citizens. It is amazing how developing a skill that they love to do can turn their life around. When others begin to admire your work, it will ignite your confidence. Develop your strengths and do not worry about your weaknesses.
